The third topic is sign. The sign that you have achieved cessation, or gokpa, is that the kleshas have begun to subside. Little by little, you find that they gradually cease to exist. You begin to become somewhat bland, ordinary, and boring. Because of your practice, you cease to play games and you become a decent person. You are cleaned up, so to speak, and you become a more reasonable person—on the spot, or gradually. The ultimate sign is realizing that there are no more hang-ups of any kind. At that point, you have achieved nirodha and begun to experience nirvana.
Sign or token means that you are giving up worldly commitments in the sense of pure, unreasonable indulgence. Even sensible worldly people would not regard such indulgence as good. Beyond that, you are becoming highly disciplined. You are realistic, proper, and industrious; you have self-discipline and project dignity. Such ordinary decency is recognized as a token of cessation. There is virtue in such everyday logic as driving carefully and not bouncing your checks. Although those virtues may seem superficial, little things like that are still considered to be related with the possibility of gokpa. That is, the logic of ordinary household life is directed toward cessation: there is an element of sanity and of transcending samsara. Although that may seem like a vague possibility, such logic has juice in it, and truth.
